Consider What You Are Sowing

It is sad when children of God act as if there are no consequences for their words or actions. We seem to forget the Scripture that tells us: “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance but as the One who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct; for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy” (1Peter 1:14-16). The Bible equally tells us that we are created in the image of God and His likeness and that God doesn’t speak His Words or act in vain. All that He says or does always have an outcome! If we believe this, it then follows that our words and even actions are not in vain as well; they equally set things in motion both physically and spiritually. For this reason the Bible tells us many times to be mindful of our tongue, mouth and heart as the things we say, thoughts, motives and actions will be judged. On that DAY no man will feign ignorance:“If you say, ‘But we didn’t know about this’, wont He who weighs hearts consider it? Won’t He who protects your life know? Wont He repay a person according to his work” (Proverbs 24:12). You may argue that we are not in bondage but we are free in Christ. This is true, but the freedom we have been given comes with responsibilities. Thus, we have to be mindful of the things we say, think or do because as we walk the earth drawing breath each day we are actually sowing seeds.

Our words (spoken or unspoken) and actions are seeds. These seeds once sown must germinate. This is a principle that God instituted from the beginning: “As long as the earth endures, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night will not cease” (Genesis 8:22). This tells us about the cyclical state of events thereafter. If we apply that idea to planting, it means whatever is planted will germinate and grow to harvest. Please note that it is not only tithes and offerings that we sow; as earlier said our actions and words are seeds as well and they will be reaped just as the tithes and offerings. Each day we sow, either good seeds or bad, and there is a promise that it will not only germinate but we will reap what had been sown. This is because the Lord of the harvest is in charge and not the laborers. He is the One that causes what has been sown to grow. However, the onus is on you and I to ensure that we sow good seeds.

So many are at a juncture in their lives wish they could uproot the seeds they sowed earlier because what they are presently reaping they hadn’t bargained for. A lot are in throes of pain and regret wishing they can redirect. You are 25 and you are still saying when you grow up you would do better. Hey! You are already up; live a life that is qualitative and responsible. Stop sowing to the flesh because only pain, regret, disappointment and destruction would one reap from it. Maybe you are younger, and you think you have a lot of time to make mistakes. Don’t be deceived, God will indeed cleanse the record when you repent and ask Him for forgiveness (before He returns), but be rest assured that you will live with the result of the mistakes! Stop sowing to the flesh as you reap things down the line you never bargained for. Some crops take time to fruit, some fruit twice or thrice a year. So does the seeds we sow in our lives. These seeds may not fruit in years to come if Jesus tarries. Some fruit in weeks, months or days. Friend, don’t be deceived, what you sow will germinate. You cannot sow oranges and hope to reap apples:“Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows he will also reap, because the one who sows to his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit”(Galatians 6:7-8).

What are you sowing? What have you sown? You cannot sow laziness, slothfulness, unfaithfulness and the likes and hope to reap wealth and loyalty. You may be working in the Church but your actions and words (which are seeds) are hypocritical and wicked, don’t be deceived, you cannot mock God:“Surely the Levites who wandered away from Me when Israel went astray, and who strayed from Me after their idols, will bear the consequences of their sin”(Ezekiel 44:10). The fact that you are still in the position of service does not mean by some magic what you had sown will be changed. On the contrary, you must repent of these deeds and uproot them from your heart and allow God’s word to be planted in its place: “Sow righteousness for yourselves and reap faithful love; break up your untilled ground. It is time to seek the Lord until He comes and sends righteousness on you like the rain” (Hosea 10:12). God bless you as you reflect on these words.
